Civil Service Examination

Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering is popular as GATE exam. It evaluates the knowledge the candidates possess in undergraduate level subjects. This test is used as screening criteria for public sector jobs, for PG admissions as well as for research and development organizations.
GATE is organized by, NCB-GATE(National Coordination Board ) of Central HRD Ministry and conducted jointly by IISc Bangalore along with seven IITs. PSUs use this test for entry-level recruitments. Engineering Services Examination
Engineering Services Examination is organized by UPSC (Union Public Services Commission). The engineering graduates of Electronics & Telecommunication, Electrical, mechanical as well as Civil engineering disciplines are eligible to appear for the test. This recruitment is done to meet engineering and technology as well as managerial functions of the government.

Bank Specialist Officers
(Available only to graduates of CS, IT, ECE branches of engineering.)

Bank PO (Probationary Officers)
Graduate engineers are also eligible to apply for the vacancy of Probationary Officers(PO) in public sector banks as well as private banks. On completion of probation, the candidates are placed in the cadre of officers and later promoted to assistant managers and branch managers.
They play a critical role in sanctioning loans to small borrowers, dealing with complaints, deposit mobilization, handling ATM problems, marketing, attracting new customers, checking credit profile of borrowers, issue of cheque books, banks drafts, and other instruments, following up of debt recovery etc. State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, UCO Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Syndicate Bank, Vijaya Bank, Dena Bank and other banks regularly recruit Probationary Officers. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Karnataka Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank are among the private sector banks that recruit Probationary Officers.
State PSC (State Public Service Commissions)
Engineers can apply for state Public Service commissions of twenty-nine states in India. Their functions are similar to the work of UPSC for each state as per the constitution.
Functions of state PSCs are:
- To select candidates equitably and fairly for vacancies in state govt departments by conducting tests and interviews ;
- To devise selection procedures and advise the states on methods of selection for different positions in state civil services including local bodies such as municipalities and gram panchayats.
- To provide advice to states on policies on internal promotions, eligibility norms, qualification requirements and age limits, deputation and transfers from one cadre to another cadre or service, eligibility for promotional salary benefits, fitment benefits, perquisites according to pay commission rule, interpretation of the rules; and provide expert advice on disciplinary actions and cases needing disciplinary proceedings.
Vacancies under the jurisdiction of state PSCs include judges, lecturers, and professors in state govt colleges, Asst officers, executive officers, inspectors, Agricultural officers and engineers, registrars, electrical engineers, Asst engineers, Mechanical and civil engineers, and secretaries. Vacancies are categorized as group A, group B, and C.
There are some functions of PSCs which are applicable to a particular state only. Exams conducted by state PSCs are similar to UPSC examinations.
State Engineering Services
State level engg services examinations are conducted by state PSCs to meet the requirement of technical manpower of the state govt and state PSUs. Applications are submitted online. Vacancies can occur in Civil engg, Mechanical engg, Electrical Engg as well as other branches, for departments such as irrigation, PWD, Electricity boards, housing, urban development.
SSC CGL (Combined graduate level) Test
The examination is conducted for recruiting graduate candidates for group B as well as group C positions in central ministries, departments. The examination is conducted on four tier basis. The fourth tier tests the candidate’s computer skill. First, three tiers cover prelims, main exam as well as the descriptive (offline) test there are no interviews in this hiring process.
Indian Railways: Senior Section Engineers & Junior Engineers
Indian Railways employs engineers in different positions. Senior section engineer is a responsible position at the section level. Junior engineers assist the section engineers and senior section engineers. Candidates are required to apply online using RRB(Railway Recruitment Board) website.
