Civil Engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering courses. The jobs for these engineers are all-time high due to heavy development works in the most of Type A and B type cities which includes building roadways/highways, local metro trains in big cities, residential and commercial complexes etc. So the demand for a talented Civil Engineer is always there.
Most B.E. students think that what they will do after B.Tech in Civil Engineering or what is the future scope of civil engineering. The answer is simple and most of the graduates try to find out the job immediately after the course. Here I will share the Salary of Civil Engineers in India for government & private companies, and central government, as well as the state, controlled govt departments.
If you are studying in top govt engineering colleges, the civil sector companies regularly visit for fresh recruitments. The pay package varies from company to company. There are also chances that the same Enterprise may offer highest CTC to IITians and slightly lower to NITians and other regional college students.
The campus place packages start from Rs 400K per annum and may increase to anywhere depending on your performance in the company.
If you are getting recruited through the walk-in interviews, the package will start from 2Lakh per year.
The core sector companies do not pay higher as compare to software companies at an initial stage.
This is all about the pay packages in private sector in India for the civil engineers. Now let’s check the details of pay in government the government sector.
We can divide the government sector into three categories
- Public Sector Undertakings
- Central Government Departments
- State Govt Department
I have shared the Highest Paying PSU Jobs list. After the implementation of 3rd PRC report the leading Maharatna & Navratna Companies are offering the package of more than 10Lakh annually. Again we can sub categorize the Public Sector Company jobs into the three parts based on the offered pay scale.
|Pre-Revised Pay Scale||Revised Pay Scale||CTC Per Year||List of PSU|
|24900-50500||60000-180000||10 – 15 Lakh||BPCL, ONGC,NTPC, HPCL,OIL, GAIL, PGCIL|
|20600-46500||50000-160000||8 - 10 Lakh||NHPC, SAIL,MTNL, BHEL, CIL, EIL|

Central Government Salary
Although Public sector enterprises in India pay a big amount to the fresh graduates, however, the social security one gets in central government job isn’t anywhere. They offer less and almost fixed amount irrespective of the duty of department. Before 7th pay commission, a civil engineer got appointed in the pay scale of 15600-39100 in the grade pay of 5400. After the pay revision, the revised basic pay for this pay scale is 56100. Here is the gross salary table for the Civil Engineer appointed in Central Government departments.
|6th CPC Pay Scale||7th CPC Basic Pay||Gross Salary||List of Departments|
|15600-39100 GP 5400||56100||67230 - 90000||Indian Railways, Ordinance Dept, Irrigation, PWD, Roadways, etc|
Civil Engineers can work in Following departments on the post through Engineering Service Examination:
- India Railways Service/ Store Service
- Indian Ordnance Factory Service
- Central Engg Service Roads
- Central Water Engg Service
- Defense Service
- Skill Development Service
- Other Departments
- Bhabha Atomic Research center (BARC)

The state government also recruit the young civil engineer in the state public department, irrigation department etc. The recruitment is conducted by the respective state public commission. The recruited officer posted as assistant engineer position. The pay scale of these engineers is 15600-39100 with a GP of 5400. After 7th CPC same has been revised & placed into level 10 with initial basic pay of 56100.
You can see here that both central, as well as state government departments, are offering almost same packages to civil graduate. But the facilities & promotion opportunity may be higher in the Central government department.
