All you need to know about Indian Engineering Services Exam Pattern & Syllabus

The Union Public Service Commission has released the official notification for the Indian Engineering Service post for the young engineers to work at prestigious Group A & B post in the various Government Departments and Ministries. Applications are available to apply online through Official Website of UPSC from 26 September 2018 to 22 October 2018.

Here we will discuss the examination pattern and selection procedure for the same.



Engineering Service Selection Procedure

The UPSC Engineering Service Recruitment examination conducted each year in three stages comprising of Preliminary Examination, Mains Exam (Written descriptive type) and personality test.

The details and marking pattern for these stages are as follows

  • Preliminary Exam: 500 Marks
  • Mains Exam: 600 Marks
  • Personality Test: 200 Marks

Preliminary Exam

The Engineering services stage I exam also known as a preliminary exam which will have two objective type papers. The 1st paper will have General Studies and Engineering Aptitude and the 2nd paper will have an objective test on the respective engineering branch.

The Engineering service prelims examination is a critical one for the selection on Class-I post as the marks obtained in the paper is a way to appear in the main examination as well as the same also to be considered for preparing the final merit list.



Main Examination

As per the UPSC Engineering Services Official Notification, the total number of candidates attend the main exams are 6 to 7 times of the total available vacancy notified in that year.

The Main exam will have two papers of 300 marks for each on the respective branch of Engineering. The paper pattern is descriptive type and candidate will have 3 hour time to answer the question.

The main exam appearing candidates should keep in mind that marks won’t be allotted on the basis of superficial knowledge.

The bad writing skill will also cost the deduction of 5% marks from the total.

Personal Interview

This is the last stage of the recruitment process and carries total 200 marks. There is no minimum cut off marks criteria for the section. The Interview will be taken by the panel of an interviewer who may be professor from the reputed government engineering college or class one officer from the government department or both.
