Madhya Pradesh Sub Inspector Selection Procedure & Syllabus

MP Police force is part of Govt of Madhya Pradesh. It is controlled and supervised by the state home ministry. It is headed by the officer of DGP rank. MP is one of the largest states.

Challenges faced by MP police relate to connectivity and access to remote interior areas due to geographic conditions and limitations of the infrastructure. Investigating cybercrimes and economic offenses too pose an important challenge. Providing emergency services in remote inaccessible locations is a critical challenge.



Sub Inspector is generally in charge of a Thana and maintains law and order within the jurisdiction of the Thana. Constables, Head constables and ASIs report to him/her.  The position is of considerable responsibility, particularly related to crime prevention and crime investigation.

Technical positions of Sub Inspector involve the technical responsibility such as radio communication, fingerprint expertise and ordnance (weapon system). Both technical and non-technical posts involve office duties also such as keeping records, collection and storing of evidence, filing court cases, giving testimony, storing and protecting assets, keeping account of expenses, listening to public complaints, creating awareness etc.

Madhya Pradesh SI Selection Procedure

 Main Procedures involved are the written test, the fitness (endurance) test as well as personal interview. MPPEB (Madhya Pradesh Professional Exam Board), also known as VYAPAM, Conducts examination for Sub Inspector posts.

The technical  vacancy positions include:

  • SI( fingerprint),
  • SI (Radio),
  • SI( (QD ),  and
  • SI( Ordnance )

Non – tech positions:

  • SI (District force),
  • SI (Spl.  branch ),
  • Platoon commander as well as Subedar.

After the candidates fill in online applications, the selection process involves written exam, document/ testimonial verification, height, and chest measurement if applicable and medical examination of the candidate. Those candidates who are successful will take physical fitness (endurance) test and finally face the personal interview.



Written Exam Pattern

The first paper is to be answered by candidates of technical posts only.  The Questions cover general science including Physics, Chemistry as well as Mathematics. The exam is of 120 minutes.

Second paper covers English proficiency, Hindi proficiency, as well as IQ and GK. This paper will be answered by both SI technical as well as SI (non – technical) position candidates. The exam will be for three hours.

Written Exam Syllabus

First paper (Technical)

Mathematics questions carry 34 marks and physics as well as chemistry carry 33 each.  Generally plus 2 level questions and problems may be given.

Mathematics questions will have the syllabus for the graduation course.

Chemistry would include physical chemistry, organic as well as inorganic chemistry and polymer chemistry.

Physics would generally include measurements, scalar-vector quantities, gravity, properties of matter volume- temperature- mass, oscillations, circular motion, friction.

Second (Common) paper

A. Hindi and English language part

 This part may include  Poetry, prose, Hindi Vyakaran-grammar, active & passive voice, tenses, articles, comprehension of the unseen passage, use of vocabulary, interpreting meaning, phrases, idioms,  grammatical correction, poetry, summarizing passages, local Hindi newspapers of MP.

B. Intelligence and General knowledge part

This part may include Current affairs and common knowledge about Madhya Pradesh state, about India as well as global affairs, such as economics, environment, history, geography, culture, heritage, wildlife, rivers, irrigation projects, tourist attractions, personalities of MP, authors, sportspersons, artists, political leaders as well as IQ part: Logical reasoning and general intelligence   questions, critical thinking, number series, alphabetic series, patterns, analogies.

Physical Standard Test

Those who qualify the written examination, they need to appear for the document verification process. After scrutiny of the certificates, their physical examination of Height & Chest (Only for Male Candidates) will be conducted. And lastly, the knock knee and flat foot will be examined by the department.

Those who meet with the above criteria will have to appear in the Physical Efficiency test.

Physical Efficiency Test

This is the test of endurance, fitness and physical efficiency. The candidates are required to meet the minimum fitness criteria in the race, long jump, and shot-put.

Personal Interview

Interviewers of the selection panel will judge the suitability of the candidate for the Sub-inspector post, by posing questions related to what motivates you to choose a policing career. Knowledge about the state as well as the general knowledge can be tested as well.

Panelists may ask about fairness, ethics and human rights as well as the constitution of the country and fundamental rights. They would try to know if you have the ability to work in teams. Questions can cover individual attainments as well as team attainments as well as your role in the teams. Leadership quality and risk-taking ability. Ability to analyze and use info and draw intelligent conclusions can be examined.

The final selection for the post of Sub Inspector in MP Police will be based on the aggregate marks obtained in written examination and Interview section. A category wise merit list will be prepared for the selected candidates.
