Recruitment of Constable as well as Sub Inspector posts is done through an online application process by Odisha Police Staff Selection Board. The DSP, as well as higher positions, are filled through competitive exam conducted by Odisha Public Service Commission. DSP: Job Profile

DSP (DeputySuperintendent ofPolice) assists SP, who is the Head of the district administration of police force. Based on power delegated he/ she supervises dist. prosecution branch, Dist. police line, Dist. traffic branch or crime branch DSP has to operate in close collaboration with state police headquarters with regard to the selection, recruitment and training of additional staff such as constables, HCs, ASIs in the district. Along with tremendous responsibility for law and order, the position has adequate discretionary powers to deal with difficult situations.

In metros and large cities, special duties exist, such as collection of intelligence from reliable sources, pass on intelligence to headquarters. He/ She is responsible for time management, motivating the staff, ensure discipline, monitoring working condition, and efficiency of policemen.

DSP may look after and supervise investigations, prepare intelligence reports for the DIG or manage special operations for CBI or Home Ministries, where he/she gets special powers.

He/ she may advise collector office for prohibitory orders or curfew in extreme cases if a risk of breach of law order is extremely high. In addition, there are crowd control duties during Durga Pooja, Holi, Id-ul-Fitr, bakridMoharram, and Rath Yathras as well as rallies or campaigns.

Eligibility criteria: Must be graduate from a recognized university, age limit 21 to 32 years. Selection process: written exams and interview.



Sub Inspector: Job Profile

SI is the most important person in policing ranks at the grassroots level. He/she faces enormous duties and responsibilities as  In charge of Thana(police station). Normally SI controls and supervises  ASI, HC, and Constables around 10 to 25 in number. Duties differ slightly between town Thana, rural Thana as well as railway police station.

In general, he/she controls and prevents criminal acts, detects crimes, prosecutes the accused persons in courts.

Maintains paperwork. : reports and registers for FIR, bail bonds, charge-sheet, warrants, property, summons, crimes,  convictions and admin documents / legal records.

Eligibility: age: between 21 to 25 years (relaxed  in reserve category)

Education: 1. must have passed with Odiyaa language at 7thSTD, SI must be graduate from a recognized university, For SI (dog squad): Bachelor of Veterinary science from a recognized university.

Selection Process: 1 Physical fitness, measurements, written exam, viva as well as Psychological tests.

Constable: Job Profile

Constable is the last position in the chain of command. She/he is recruited directly. Main duties involve patrolling, escorting, providing VIP security,  multipurpose roles in Thana as well as circle/ district HQ, paperwork, writing reports, and diaries, helping SI in crime prevention and investigation,  traffic and railway duties,  crowd control during election rallies and demonstrations.

Eligibility: age between 18 and 23 years,  pass in 10+2 level or equivalent, Odiya language at 7th std level, proficiency in Odiya language.

Selection process: document verification, physical measurements and physical fitness and written examination.
