The most of the SSC CGL aspirants are preparing hard for the upcoming examination. Many of them may be engineers from various streams like Electrical (EE), Electronics & Communication (ECE/E&TC E), Mechanical (ME), Civil (CE), Computer Science (CSE) & Information technology (IT) engineering. They might be thinking that will this be an acceptable post for an engineer. Here in this article, we will find out the answer to it by comparing the salary data, post rank and job security of different government jobs like PSU, Banking and other.
The post is intended for the students who feel it hard to crack the GATE exam or IBPS/SBI PO Exam. The SSC CGL may be the best choice for these candidates.
Salary per month
I have already shared the SSC CGL Salary of various post indicated in the advertisement. Same is shown in the table below for top posts.
|Post Name||Pay Band||Gross Salary in Rupees per month|
|Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer||4800||57920-66336|
|Assistant Section Officer/ Inspector of Income Tax/ Inspector (Central Excise, Preventive Officer, Examiner)/ Assistant Enforcement Officer/ Sub-Inspector||4600||54680-62664|
|Assistant/ Superintendent/ Divisional Accountant/ Sub Inspector/ Junior Statistical Officer||4200||43280-48944|
Now you take any Government company (HAL, BEL, NBCC, MDC, BSNL, TCIL, BBNL) or the PSU which recruits graduate engineers through GATE exam and place them on IDA pay scale of 16400-40500. If you check the PSU Salary Structure of the companies, it may be around 45k to 60k per month. From the above table, you can see that gross pay is similar in both cases. In the same way, you can check the SBI PO Salary & Other Banks PO Salary. You will find that CGL may offer better compensation as compared to banking jobs in India.
Rank of Post
Earlier I have shared in the article how to find best PSU jobs for Engineers in India. In that post, I clearly mentioned the importance of post rank in Government Jobs. Many PSUs hires Graduate Engineers on the class-I post but there are some PSUs like BSNL, MTNL, BBNL etc are still hiring the engineers on group B post and same rank you are getting in by clearing SSC CGL Exam. So promotion opportunity and career growth for SSC CGL will more or like same as these PSUs.
Examination Difficulty Level
All engineers are well aware of the difficulty level of GATE exam. As most of the PSUs started hiring through GATE, the level of test & competition increased. After clearing the GATE exam, you may need to appear for Personal Interview & Group discussion. However, in the case of SSC CGL, you just need to clear the written exam and you will get the job without appearing in Personal Interview. So it is easy to get selected in SSC CGL post.

As we know that newly SSC CGL graduates get posting in various ministries, central government departments. The central government job is considered most secure one in India. You will get pay commission benefits after every 10 years irrespective of the department or ministry performance. However, in PSUs, the pay revision benefits totally depend on the company performance & profit margin. For example the ITI Limited, HMT employees are still waiting for the benefits of 2nd PRC which was implemented in the year of 2007. And in the cases of heavy financial losses government even shut down the unit or company.
So we can conclude that it would be better to join SSC CGL Job rather than joining a loss making government company.
