Recruitment of Engineers in PSUs through GATE 2017

IIT Roorkee is organizing GATE 2017 examination for which online application process is over now. Candidates are preparing hard to get top rank in the exam as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is not only providing the opportunity to pursue the higher degree in top colleges but also offer the chance to get Job in the biggest Central Public Sector Enterprises.


After the implementation of 2nd PRC Report, top Government companies are paying best salary in the market. They are no more behind regarding compensation packages, perk & allowances as compared to private jobs. Some of the CPSEs are even providing more than Rs 10 lakhs CTC to newly recruited graduate engineers.

PSU recruitment history

Earlier most of the Public Sector Undertaking was holding separate competitive test for the hiring of engineers. They also used to appoint candidates from Campus placement from renowned colleges.  Now the GATE has made the whole recruitment process natural for Government Companies as well as for the job seeking engineering candidates. The interested Government enterprises issue notification (After releasing the GATE Official Advertisement) for the vacancies in their company. Graduate Engineers have to apply for GATE test, and after that, they can fill the online job application form from the official website of the PSU.

PSU Status

There are many types classification among the CPSEs like status, schedule & sector. By the performance of the CPSEs, Government of India time to time awards the Maharatna, Navratna & Miniratna I & II Status. There is also four type of categorization of CPSE by schedule namely A, B, C & D. Most of the top companies fall in category A schedule. The third criteria are sector wise like Oil industry, Power Sector, Telecom sector, Mining, etc. They pay for newly recruited employee depends on the status of PSU, financial affordability (Profit margin & revenue)pay scale in which they get appointed. Maharatna & Navratna are best for Engineering Graduate, but you still can find some exceptions.

PSU Pay scale

Most the Centre Public Sector Enterprises appoints newly recruited executives on following pay scales

E1 ===> 16400-40500 BSNL JTO, BBNL ET

E2 ===> 20600-46500 MTNL, SAIL

E3 ===> 24900-50500 NTPC, PGCIL, BHEL

The CPSEs which are recruiting engineers on E3 (24900-50500) pay scale, they are proving highest packages. Only these Public sector undertakings are offering more than 10lakhs CTC for Graduates. So you must give first preference to the companies which have notified 24900 pay scale on their advertisement. Second preference may be given to E2 (20600-46500) scale and last for E1. Now we can see that PSUs jobs are very lucrative and secure one but do single exam like GATE is offering equal opportunity to appearing candidates for CPSEs jobs.

Benefits of standard GATE exam for PSU recruitment

  1. Job seeker need not appear in separates examination for individual PSU.
  2. As the hiring process fee is Nill or less than Rs 500 so they don’t have to pay high separate recruitment examination fee.
  3. They don’t have to study different syllabus for the various vacancy.
  4. Government companies expenditure on recruitment come down.

Disadvantage of Common exam

There are a lot of benefits of the GATE exam for recruitment in various Government Department & Public Sector undertakings. But there are some drawbacks of the same.

Minimizing the Job Opportunities for  Graduate Engineers

  1. One candidate can select only one GATE paper code.
  2. As for most of the top Government, PSU jobs vacancies are being notified through GATE only. Hence candidates are getting only one chance to get the job in a year.
  3. Competition level became very high due to single all India exams.
  4. Job opportunity for the streams like Instrumentation, Instrumentation & Control, Instrumentation & Electronics, Electronics & Instrumentation, Instrumentation & Process Control etc reduced due to common exam.
