Most of the students choose to become an engineer immediately after the 12th because it provides ample of career opportunities for the candidates. There are ample of job options in both governments as well as in private sector. A candidate can even opt for higher studies if he/she wants to work in the top post of Government or in private MNCs.
I believe the Engineering student should decide the future plans immediately after entering into the 2nd year or 3rd semester. It is golden chance to start preparing for the career. He/she will have enough time to get into the desired field just after engineering.
Here is list of career option an engineering student can go for:
Jobs-Govt or Private
Most of the candidates opt engineering course as millions of vacancies are advertised each year. Most of the Government organization and top corporate giants publishes vacancy every year even few visits the top engineering colleges for campus recruitment. So those who want to job they can go either government department via GATE or join private MNCs through campus recruitment.
I have already shared a list of best PSU jobs for engineering candidates. Many Maharatna & Navaratna company pays even higher than the private company managerial jobs. The Public sector undertaking jobs are more secure with better compensation. In order to get the job in Government companies, one needs to appear in GATE examination and he/she has to fill the online job application for of PSU where he/she want to work. Most of the PSUs call for Group discussion and personal interview. On the basis of GATE exam score and GD & PI performance, candidates are selected for the job. The process is somewhat lengthy and one has to follow to get the secure and stable job.
Now let’s discuss little the private MNCs. We can categorize the private MNCs in two sector software and core companies. In order to get the job in core companies, you must be of sound knowledge of engineering subjects. Whereas for the software should have a good understanding of programming languages. Generally, software companies announce open campus recruitment in cities which are open to all college engineering students. So job searchers need to keep eye on such events to get software engineer post in the top MNCs.
Higher studies- MTech/MBA/MS
Many students have a dream to pursue higher studies in the best universities to get the top managerial & technical post. The top universities MBA/ MS passed out get selected easily in reputed companies at respected positions. The only thing matter here is the repo of the University of College. There are thousands of colleges but few of them are reputed and if you go such esteemed colleges chances of the better job will be the highest. So before taking a step ahead for MTech/MBS/MS please don’t ignore the importance of the University.
Civil service again competitive exam held every year for the recruitment of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and others. The whole exam process conducted by Union Public service commission and divided into three parts i.e. Prelims, Main & personal interview.

The internship is the best way to test the individual interest on the job. Many Companies offers the internship for Engineering graduates during or after completion of the course. The biggest advantage of the internship is hands-on with the project assigned by the company. There are many companies which pay salary to interns.
You may find some reputed corporate which takes screening test from the interested candidates. On the basis of the individual performance, an organization can hire an intern on the permanent rolls but this should not be taken as guaranteed.
The internship helps the candidate to get the job and he/she can include the same in the bio. So if you are not yet selected for a company, the internship may help to show the ability and hence increases the chance of selection in further recruitments.
Many think that teaching isn’t a high paying job. But it isn’t right at all. An Engineering student can start part teaching in coaching institutes or home tuitions or as an online tutor just after entering the college. I think it is the most convenient way to earn money just from the college days. If you like it, you can continue the teaching as a full-time career.
Due to the lots of competitive examination and recruitment exams then there is a huge scope in the teaching industry. Just you need to put consistent efforts for good results.
This is most hard among all as it won’t guarantee a fix monthly payment. But this provides maximum opportunity to grow you as an entrepreneur. One needs to have an idea and ability to transform into product/service and ultimately user satisfaction.
An individual or a group of people can start this with the help of financer or government loan. The important thing is here your idea must be unique & achievable and investors are willing to fund it.
There are endless opportunities for the engineering. One needs to go with the field he/she likes. If you choose a certain job just for the sake of work, you may probably be fed up with it in few years and there are high chances that you won’t have the time to switch over to another. So be careful while deciding the field. In order to get more idea about work culture in the various job, you should meet with the people who are actually working there. They may be your college seniors or relative or anyone else. Just don’t rely more on the internet.
